DeFi (Decentralized Finance) is an umbrella term for financial applications built on blockchain technology, primarily Ethereum, aiming to recreate traditional financial services in a decentralized, permissionless, and transparent manner. Unlike traditional finance, DeFi eliminates intermediaries like banks, allowing users direct control over their assets. Core DeFi applications include decentralized exchanges (DEXs), lending and borrowing platforms, stablecoins, and synthetic assets. Yield farming is a specific and popular DeFi strategy where crypto holders leverage various DeFi protocols to maximize returns on their digital assets. It involves moving crypto assets between different lending protocols, liquidity pools, and staking platforms to earn the highest possible interest or rewards. Participants "farm" for yield by providing liquidity to DEXs (earning trading fees and governance tokens), lending assets on protocols (earning interest), or staking tokens. While yield farming offers potentially high returns, it comes with significant risks, including smart contract vulnerabilities, impermanent loss (for liquidity providers), high gas fees, and the inherent volatility of underlying crypto assets. Understanding the protocols, smart contract security, and risk profiles is crucial before engaging.
